remove from DP did not remove files

We have 2 very large OSD files that together are over 10GB.   They have been pushed out to our secondary sites, which are also our DPs.

In the SCCM admin console I went to each OSD package and remove the package from ALL DPs.    But the files did NOT delete from the DPs.    We still have the following.

SMSPKGD$ still has the .WIM files
SMSPKG   still has the .PCK files

So all together it is over 20 GB of disk space we are trying to clean up.    I wrote a PowerShell script and deployed this using SCCM to delete these files.   The .PS1 script executes yet nothing gets deleted.   I know the PowerShell scripts works because I've tested it on mock-DPs.   The issue is the security rights that are set on the D:\SMSPKGD$ & SMSPKG folders.   Even the system account can't defiles inside of them.

So how do you get rid of these files?   We really don't want to manually log into each server.  We wanted an automated solution.  and why did SCCM not remove everything when we walked through the wizard to delete from all DPs?
